After Week 4 of the college football season, the defending national champion Georgia Bulldogs are ranked 38 with 2.5868 points in the Superior Performance Ranking System (SPRS).  You may ask yourself, “How can that be?”

Georgia has played teams that were ranked 133, 132, 77, and 123 at the time by SPRS.  Using the calculation method on the Description page, one can perform the calculations manually to determine how many points they received for each game, with the total for all four games being only 2.5868.  The ranking of their opponents being so low has worked against Georgia even though they won by sizeable margins in three of the four games.  The game against South Carolina, which was ranked 77 by SPRS at the time, saw Georgia come from behind to only win by 10 points.

SPRS does not rank teams based on past performance or current potential.  Why should SPRS rank teams based on past performance or current potential?  It shouldn’tSPRS ranks teams based on current performance using score margin and current opponent rank, which eliminates bias that is not current performance based.

Do you agree or disagree with the way SPRS ranks teams?  Please feel free to share your opinion by submitting a comment.

Are preseason rankings appropriate for a college football ranking system?  If so, please explain how they are appropriate?  If not, then please justify your position.

If the preseason rankings are just an expression of the ranking system’s opinion of how the teams will perform during the season, then there is no harm in publishing them.  However, if they affect the rankings during the season instead of how the teams are actually performing, then the ranking system seems to have a bias built into it which should be avoided.

SPRS (Superior Performance Ranking System) does not publish a preseason ranking because there are no results before the season which the system can use to determine what the rankings should be.  In fact SPRS does not publish rankings until after Week 4 of the season because the system needs sufficient performance data in order to provide a ranking that is considered accurate.

SPRS does not depend on past performance or current potential to determine what it considers an accurate ranking.  The ranking system uses score margin and current opponent ranking as a measure of performance to determine what points a team earns each week.

The teams being considered for a place in the college football playoff have all had outstanding years. Three of the teams have been decided upon and now the CFP Committee must decide between two teams for the last position in the playoffs.

One of the teams being considered is undefeated but has won all of their games by only 7 points or less.  The average ranking of their opponent throughout the season was 65.  The other team being considered lost only one game by 3 points to an opponent ranked 5th at the time of the game.  They beat the remaining opponents on their schedule by at least 17 points with the average being 28 points.  The average ranking of their opponent throughout the season was 28.

How should the CFP Committee determine which team should be the final team to make the college football playoffs?  Should they decide that because one team was undefeated that it should be in the playoffs?  Using SPRS (Superior Performance Ranking System), I believe that it would be shown that the team with one loss actually performed better over the course of the entire season.  Therefore, it is the team actually deserving of being in the college football playoffs.

Please leave a comment and explain which team you think should be in the playoff and why.

When I examined the results of SPRS for the 2022 college football season, I found two very interesting things that happened or would have happened if the outcomes of a few games had been slightly different.  If you would like, take a guess at what those were by looking at the ranking points and considering the formulas used to calculate the points.

I will reveal what those two very interesting results were early next week by commenting on this post.  Have an enjoyable week!!!

College football rankings based on measurable and verifiable data are needed in order to minimize/eliminate subjective bias and ensure fairness in determining which teams should be ranked as the best and be eligible for the playoffs.

The Superior Performance Ranking System (SPRS) uses two performance factors, which are score margin and current opponent ranking.  The current opponent ranking is not dependent on any subjective opinion.  It is determined by the SPRS accumulated points at any specific time of the football season.

Everyone can get the score data and perform the calculations specified on the Description page.  At this time SPRS gets its score data by permission from https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/years.  Every team can know what its accumulated points are each week and determine what they need to do in order to accumulate the points that they estimate will be needed to make the playoffs.

Do you agree or disagree with the argument presented above?  Express your opinion by leaving a comment if you desire to do so.

In my opinion a ranking system should be based on measurable data, and in terms of college football I think that current performance is the best measurable data point.  For me two measurements, score margin and current opponent ranking, are the key elements of performance.

Therefore, the Superior Performance Ranking System (SPRS) uses a scale factor that is directly proportional to score margin and a scale factor that is directly proportional to current opponent ranking, and takes the product of those two factors to assign points for every team.  The points accumulate during the season and each week the teams are ranked on their accumulated points.  The details of this system are provided on the Ranking System Description page which is accessible through the Description selection on the toolbar at the top of this page.

Do you believe that this ranking system is a viable alternative to the one used by the CFP Committee?  Please explain your reason(s) for your answer to this question?
