After Week 4 of the college football season, the defending national champion Georgia Bulldogs are ranked 38 with 2.5868 points in the Superior Performance Ranking System (SPRS). You may ask yourself, “How can that be?”
Georgia has played teams that were ranked 133, 132, 77, and 123 at the time by SPRS. Using the calculation method on the Description page, one can perform the calculations manually to determine how many points they received for each game, with the total for all four games being only 2.5868. The ranking of their opponents being so low has worked against Georgia even though they won by sizeable margins in three of the four games. The game against South Carolina, which was ranked 77 by SPRS at the time, saw Georgia come from behind to only win by 10 points.
SPRS does not rank teams based on past performance or current potential. Why should SPRS rank teams based on past performance or current potential? It shouldn’t. SPRS ranks teams based on current performance using score margin and current opponent rank, which eliminates bias that is not current performance based.
