Season 2022

Two very interesting results in 2022 season

When I examined the results of SPRS for the 2022 college football season, I found two very interesting things that happened or would have happened if the outcomes of a few games had been slightly different.  If you would like, take a guess at what those were by looking at the ranking points and considering the formulas used to calculate the points.

I will reveal what those two very interesting results were early next week by commenting on this post.  Have an enjoyable week!!!

The first interesting outcome from SPRS was that the team ranked 4th after week 14 was Kansas State, which I should mention had three losses at the time. How could that be? Looking at their losses, one sees that they lost by 7 to Tulane, ranked 32 at the time. They lost by 10 to TCU, ranked 8 at the time. Finally they lost by 7 to Texas, ranked 16 at the time. So they did not lose by much and they lost to highly ranked teams.

Looking at their major wins, one sees that they beat Oklahoma, ranked 14 at the time, by 7. They beat Oklahoma State, ranked 17 at the time, by 48. They beat Baylor, ranked 17 at the time, by 28. Lastly they beat TCU, ranked 8 at the time, by 3 in the Big 12 Championship Game. They won by at least 28 points against two highly ranked teams, which provided significant points for them.

They met two very important criteria for gaining significant points and not losing significant points: beat highly ranked teams by a large amount and don’t lose to low ranked teams.

Now to a second interesting outcome for this past season. If Alabama had made the field goal and beaten Tennessee 52 – 49 and if they had stopped LSU’s two point conversion for a 31 – 30 win, they would have been undefeated. However, they would not have accumulated enough points to make the playoffs according to SPRS. In fact they would have still been ranked 6 after week 14. On the other hand if they had lost to Tennessee and LSU, but beaten Texas by 7 more points, beaten Texas A&M by 7 more points, and finally beaten Ole Miss by 7 more points, they would have been ranked 4 after week 14.

Those two teams provided some interesting SPRS results for the 2022 season. What is your reaction to and thoughts about the results stated above?
